水を入れて溶くだけでできるケーキミックスは1940年代にアメリカで発売されたが、最初はあまり売れなかった。 その理由は、ケーキというものは祝い事などに作る感情がこもった料理なので、インスタント的な手法で作ったケーキを人前に出したりするのは、恥ずかしかったり、手抜きと思われがちになってしまうからだ。
そこで心理学者でマーケティングの専門家であったアーネスト・ディヒターが思いついたのは、ミックス粉の材料の中から卵の成分を取り除き、料理する時に女性に卵と牛乳と食用油を加えてもらって作れるようにした。そうして、このケーキを作る女性は、「自分でちゃんと作ったケーキ」と認識できるようになって販売数も伸びたのである。
